Non-Decaffeinated Art

In February of this year I was accepted into the Arts Council Of Southwestern Indiana show Rats Live on No Evil Star: a symmetrical art exhibit.

Together with 54 other talented artists, spanning various mediums, we investigated the depiction of symmetry in art for this show.

“This exhibit aims to celebrate the diverse ways in which artists approach symmetry in their work. From traditional representations to abstract interpretations, we encourage artists to delve into the beauty and significance of symmetry across various artistic mediums.”

The focus of my piece was Inverted Symmetry – when part of an image is flipped and repeated across an axis. [more info on the different type of symmetry here]

My entry was a digital artwork entitled “Two Sides of the Same Unicorn” It was created using the iPad and the drawing program ProCreate then printed on canvas. The artwork has two sets of hanging wire on the back allowing the piece to hand with either the “water” or “fire” unicorn side facing up.

I wanted to explore not only the inverted symmetry with the flipped image, but also the Inverse of of the elements represented in the image. My idea was for a elemental unicorn created of fire/water or more practically the sea/lava. Both of these elemental representations are traditionally turbulent opposites that come together to create something new: think lava emerging from the sea to create an island, or the boiling water in a pot that cooks your meals on the stove with a flame below.

Exploring both the inverse theme of fire/water and the inverted symmetry of the visual design I hope to have fully embraced the theme of the show in double much like the image itself.
